Questions

Channel Letters: common questions

What is a channel letter sign?

A channel letter sign is a three-dimensional sign made of individual letters or shapes that stand proud of the surface they are mounted on. Each letter is fabricated as its own shallow box — aluminium returns with an acrylic face — and is usually lit from the inside with LED modules.

What is the difference between front-lit and halo-lit channel letters?

Front-lit letters push light out through a translucent acrylic face, so the letter itself glows. Halo-lit (also called reverse-lit) letters have a solid face and throw light backwards onto the wall, outlining each letter in a soft halo. The two can be combined in a single sign.

Do channel letters need a sign permit in Toronto?

Most permanent exterior signage in Toronto requires a sign permit from the City, and the rules vary by zoning and by the building itself. We factor the approval process into the project schedule and design to the requirements that apply to your property.

How long does a channel letter sign last?

Built with aluminium returns, UV-stable acrylic faces and LED modules, a channel letter sign is a long-term fixture rather than a consumable. We select materials to hold their finish through Toronto's freeze-thaw cycles, road salt and full summer sun.
